85 Bronco backfires only when I shut it off?

The problem is probably going to be your timing. If the engine has been modified in any way it could have not been timed properly. Something else may be that the carb has never been adjusted properly or may have been tampered with to much. My suggestion is to put a timing light on it and the adjust the carb. Good Luck.
